MARPOL is an international convention created to prevent marine
pollution from shipboard operations and accidents. Adopted in
1973, it has been supplemented throughout the years and
covers oil pollution, noxious liquid substances in bulk, harmful
substances carried in packaged form, and prevention of pollution
by sewage, garbage and exhaust emissions from ships.
