We never cease to be fascinated by treacherous bodies of water.
Hell Gate in the East River in New York can look like a washing
machine in an out-of-control rinse cycle when tide and wind
conspire to make for a miserable passage. The hazards of the
Columbia River Bar are well-known to pilots and other mariners
on the west coast. A place we don’t hear too much about is Cook
Straight, the 14 mile wide body of water that separates the North
Island and South Island of New Zealand, leaving the Tasman
Sea on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. To see a

trip, click here. By the way, to use the words “rough trip” here is
an understatement of astounding proportions. Don’t watch this
video on a full stomach. And don’t even begin to think about all
the sharks (or “whalers” as they’re called in that region of the
world) that love the cool deep waters off New Zealand’s shores.
Our heart goes out to every crew member aboard that ship on
that day.
