ATBs or articulated tug barges are a tug-
barge configuration using a
notched barge
and a special coupling system. The general
arrangement involves locking the tug in place
with the barge. The tug and barge generally
roll and yaw together, but pitch independently
of each other. Two of the systems used are
the intercom system and the clamp system.
The intercon system uses a pin that fits into a
rack on the barge running vertically like a
ladder, to enable the tug to slip into place for
any draft or trim of the barge. The system is
explained and illustrated with an excellent
three-dimensional animation at the
Crowley
Maritime Corp, linked to with the highlighted
text. Westec Equipment provides a clamp
system, to which we’ve also provided a
link.
Another system is the ITB, or Integrated Tug
Barge. Here the tug and barge are secured a
further degree than the ATB, and the tug and
barge pitch together as well, thus carrying out
movement in every axis in unison.
