How To Keep A Job
To keep a job, you need to do your job well, do it with a smile, and
be ready to do more. Well, that sounds so trite, it's almost insulting
to you to pawn something like that off as sage advice. But... we can
tell you this with a straight face. It will help a lot if you’re a team
player, good sport and show interest in learning.

Look... there’ll be boats where you can show interest, dedication
and a willingness to work hard, and it may seem like it’s for naught.
It may seem as if things are stacked against you. But to give things
a chance, a positive attitude will be necessary. There may be times
where you’ll have to grin and bear it.

We’re not suggesting that anyone be a fool. If you notice that when
things slow down and you want to learn more about how to plot a
course, and the master blows you off, you might not be imagining
things. Being positive doesn’t mean being stupid. People are
human. Your superiors might be threatened at the thought of you
learning their jobs and being in a position to replace them. They say
knowledge is power. And if you learn of that same master teaching
those same things to someone else when you’re not around, well…
that can make you downright resentful. But things like that happen
on every job.

You may get aboard a boat where you’re very happy because you’re
worked in a fair and decent manner. You’re taught things when you
show an interest in learning. The pay is good. There are many
boats like this out there, just as there are difficult boats out there.
Sometimes it’s luck. There are boats with fair and decent
commanding officers… and there are boats with weird chemistry
where it seems the whole crew should seek mental health
counseling.

Don’t automatically assume it’s you and lose morale. Just do your
job. There’ll be times that no matter how positive you are, you’re
going to run into people who don’t want to be friends. Think back
about being in grade school… didn’t you need reassuring from time
to time from your mother that you’re okay. Some people will see you
as a threat to their job security. Some people will resent you
because you came to this website and found your job for free, while
they paid a lot of money to someone who preys off hard working
mariners looking for work.

Conducting yourself in a positive and professional manner will help
you make it through the day and increase your chances for surviving
in a difficult industry. And if you’re patient and a little lucky, you could
ultimately wind up on a boat you love to work on, with a crew you
bond with and a promising career path for which you’re happy to
work hard and study hard. Good luck.
