Working on inland waters
may seem mundane and
safe because there are
no Force 11 seas to deal
with. Click the traffic light

video showing that inland
jobs have their share of
dangers.
At one of our regular beer and darts
sessions, we sat around and pondered
what kind of bridge would be worst to
run into if it was only partially open....
drawbridge, swing bridge, lift bridge,
etc. We ended the evening concluding
that any type of movable bridge would
be bad in the event of a botched
opening. We know the issue of bridge
accidents on inland rivers had become
a big enough problem to catch the
attention of the American Waterway
Operators in a task force some years
ago. If you click
bridge accident, you’ll
see something which is any river pilot’s
worst nightmare.

The industry is in a state of
flux these days. Commercial
fishermen are looking for
tugboat jobs. Dinner cruise
deckhands are looking into
ferry jobs because the
financial sector has cut back
on things like corporate
outings on the water. Another
alternative is the small cruise
market. Check out
Cruise
West
in Who's Hiring Now.
That will take you to a website
called cruiseshipjobs.biz, with
a section dedicated to these
smaller cruise lines.
