Research Vessel Jobs

The skills required to work aboard tugboats, whether as a captain,
mate, engineer, deckhand or other capacity happen to be similar to
the skills needed to work aboard research vessels. Although there
might seem to be no connection between the two industries, a
candidate for a tugboat job who doesn’t find what he or she is
looking for can look into the research vessel sector. We’ll have to
admit that the pickings are more limited than the tug and towing
industry. However, if a person is looking for a chief engineer job and
a job avails itself, it might not matter if the engineer job is aboard a
130’ coastal tug pushing home heating oil barges… or if it’s aboard
a 120’ research vessel collecting sea water salinity data for
oceanographers. This can especially be true if a research vessel
offers at position at your current license and other types of vessels
only have positions below your license rating.

Needless to say, there are more tugboats, pushboats, OSVs
(offshore supply vessels) out there than research vessels. But if you
don’t find what you’re looking for aboard tugboats, you could look
into research vessels. Two of the major operators of research
vessels in the United States are Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution (WHOI) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA).

Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institution is located in Wood’s Hole,
Massachusetts and operates four main research vessels, the
Knorr, Oceanis, Tioga and Atlantis. Wood’s Hole’s personnel is
made up of scientists, technical staff, support staff, marine
personnel and students. Click
Wood’s Hole Oceanographic
Institution to reach the WHOI home page and go to the bottom of the
page where you’ll see a link titled Employment Opportunities.

Wood’s Hole is a private, not-for-profit entity. There are research
jobs in the government sector with NOAA, the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration. NOAA has a large fleet with many
different sizes of vessels operating in the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans. Click
